How it all began...

"Is a question I am asked by many who come to the Barony for the first time. So I have decided to take on the challenge of digging through dusty archives and interviewing ancient and venerable 'Markers to compose, hopefully a coherent recollection of Westermark's rich history! Thank you for your patience as my efforts may take awhile!"

The Barony of the Westermark began as a small group of similarly interested SCA members in 19__ (date smudged) who founded the Shire of Westermark. These members were: Gerhardt von Nordflammen (the first Seneschal who was appointed by King Terrance), Grün der Spitzenklöppler (aka: Juana Isabella de Montoya y Ramirez), Genevive de Vendome (aka: Genevieve de la Mer Bleue), Cerf Agile du Nordelf, Paul a Durragh, Ana Moonstar, Owain Apeceon, Fred of Numinor, Lawrence of Warrane, ... (ink smear)... House Lichtehren?

Leon von Schrecken recalls: "Before there was The Westermark, there was Household Lichtehren, a group of gaming friends who found the SCA. An early discription was, "The SCA is D&D, only real!" Founding members of the Household, at least those that you might recognize are listed above, only it was Fred of Numenor and Lawrence of Warrene' and Genevive de Vendome (aka: Genevieve de la Mer Bleue) ... and Budweiser wasn't so cheap then. The first two to find the SCA were Roger Bras de Fer, and Ana Moonstar, who attended June Crown in AS XI (CE 1976). The rest of us, showed up, with a Pavilion (the multi-colored big box-kite) at the next event, Purgatorio Coronation AS X! (CE 1976), where Kevin and Patrice were crowned King and Queen. We spent the rest of the winter trying fit into the Province of St. Andrews, but never quite could.

At the first event there was also Numenorian Brick Throwing... I can't remember who won but it was different, and the riddle contest was TOUGH... Also at 12th Night in 1978 (AS XII) you'll notice the six AoAs were given out to members Cerf Agile, Chlo de la Solidaze von Shoenwald, Gerhard von Nordflammen, Leon von Schrecken, Owain Apeceon, and Paul yn Darragh y Ellen Vannin. Chloe was also "Lady Longnames" and was Gerhardt's squeeze at the time. So there is some updated Westermark History.
"

Leon also recalls: "Genevieve is an original member of Household Lichtehren, Juana came along a little later (showed up with the Piedmonters), but before the formation of the Shire. Westermark only started out as part of St. Andrews because of geography, St. Andrews' zip codes were SF, the North and Mid-Penisula, but the St. Andrews people were in SF and Pacifica and there were NO active members on the Mid-Penisula until the Lichtehren group popped up, almost fully formed in the fall of 1976. We never fit with St. Andrews, and after initial contacts never wanted to be a part of St. Andrews."

Baron Catalin recalls: "Sagan appeared on the scene later. We first met him at the Woodside Store (where Ann and I lived and [the] site to many a party). His first outing with us was that day and involved a human sacrifice, a porn theater, and a raw beef heart... ah ... the good ol days ...."

Friar Morgan discovered several historical texts related to Westermark: The First Westermark Tourney -- (Westermark being a riding of the) Province of St. Andrew's, September 17, 1977. Held at Coyote Point Park, Knoll's Picnic Area, San Mateo. Owain Apaceon was the autocrat. There was Lists for the Hero of the Westermark, a Pillaging the Dead Bodies Contest (for Ladies), Dragon Chasing, a Riddle Contest, Dancing, games and a performance by the Lichtehren Mummer's Troupe. There was a revel in the evening.

THE Baron of the Westermark, Catalin di Napoli, was quoted saying, "The Westermark became a Shire in its own right in 1978, same year as the tourney held at Coyote Park."

Friar Questus located the first petition of Westermark to be released from the Province of St. Andrews, as found in the tome entitled The First Folio of Gerhardt von Nordflammen:

A Petition

To the Crown of the West and the most Honorable Board of Directors.

From His Majestys most humble, loyal and pitiable subjects in the Westermark regarding said dutiful subjects earnest and greatly justified longings for independence from the lamentably misruled Province of St. Andrews.

Your Majesty;

Whereas; Your Majestys loyal subjects in the Westermark have functioned with de facto independence for nigh unto two years, and have held a tournament for the greater glory of the realm, and also several banquets, dinners and divers other entertainments and events to the same purpose, and have increased the numbers of your loyal subjects in the area to over forty individuals, and

Whereas; Your Majestys respectful servants in the Westermark are planning two tournaments this year and many other blissful celebrations of Your Majestys wise and judicious reign, and

Whereas; Your Majestys reverential worshipers in the Westermark have been sorely tried in their most loyal attempts to embellish the illustrious reign of Your Majesty by the incompetence and obstructionism of the current Seneschal of the Province of St. Andrews, and

Whereas; Your Majestys most obedient followers have refrained from any interference in the internal affairs of the Province of St. Andrews because of the vast distances that must be traversed between the center of said Province and the Westermark, and because the Provincial Seneschal has refused to consult or cooperate with Your loyal subjects in the Westermark and because the aforesaid Seneschal has steadfastly seen fit to place first his own petty factional aims over and above the most puissant interests of Your Majesty and the realm, which course of action was most quickly spurned by us as being vile and detestable and because the current Seneschal of the Province of St. Andrews has conducted an administration of such gross misrule that even in the northerly parts of the Province under his direct administration the main activity is senseless factional warfare falling even to the level of common brawls, and

Whereas, the vile, small-minded jobber currently throttling the innocent populace of St. Andrews in his slimy, unprincipled clutches has made the most petty, false, disgusting and infamous attacks upon Your Majestys loyal subjects in the Westermark, calling them children and deranged and intimating to them the basest of motives and the vilest of crimes which statements were so untrue that if justice had been done they might not have been made for the fact that the speakers black tongue would have rotted to putrescence in her mouth, and

Whereas, the sentiments of Your Majestys ill-used subjects in the Westermark are such that, while their hearts are filled with the deepest sympathy for the Lords and Ladies who make up the oppressed populace of the northern reaches of the Province of St. Andrews, they are still most mindful of their own sorry state and their need for relief and release, and

Whereas, Your Majestys loving servants in the Westermark feel that the only thing they might give the current Seneschal of the Province of St. Andrews is six feet of soil in the Westermark ... which is too good for him, and

Whereas, the only hope for reconciliation between Your Majestys deeply respectful subjects in the Westermark and the current Seneschal of the Province of St. Andrews is only to be expected upon the day that Luciver, Prince of Darkness, does put in a large order for ice skates and various and sundry other winter sports equipment.

Then let it be known that we do most humbly beseech of Your Majesty the following:

That You should let our people go!

That You should choose in your infinite wisdom to grant us Provincial status, a status for which we are fully qualified under corpora and all the traditions of the SCA.

That this Province of the Westermark include all of the mundane San Mateo County save the mundane burghs of Daly City, Colma, Broadmoor and Pacifica north of the Linda Mar District.

That You should install the goodly Lord Leon von Schrecken as Your trusted Seneschal in the Province of the Westermark, and

That You should do this quickly so that Your Majestys long-suffering subjects in the Westermark may have even greater cause to bless Your name and to rejoice in the exalted glories of Your reign.

Friar Morgan also located the petition of the Shire of the Westermark to become a Barony. This text appeared in the: "West Kingdom History Site for Twelfth Night AS XV (Jan '81)": and is also found in "The First Folio of Gerhard von Nordflammen."

To Their Majesties the King and Queen of the West

A PETITION

O high and puissant monarchs!

O thou pure, unblemished twin stars of chivalry and beauty conjoined
for the illumination and rapture of we poor dwellers of the lowly
mortal spheres!

O blessed and wondrous beings of light whose souls are the essence of
pure flame and whose forms are the acme of regal perfection!

O mighty sovereigns at whose wrath we tremble, at whose word we
prostrate our unworthy selves, to whose commands we bend our lowly
deeds and on whose smiles we wait with humble obedience!

O glorious orbs!

O perfection of nobility!

O lofty eminences akin to the immortal gods!

We, your abased and abject acolytes.
We, your bemoaning and beseeching bozos.
We, your cringing and crawling churls.
We, your drooling and demeaned denizens.
We, your enervated and entropic entities.
We, your fevered and frenzied fawners.
We, your groaning and grieving groupies.
We, your hapless and hopeless hoplites.
We, your indentured and inchoate intendants.
We, your japing and jaundiced jackanapes.
We, your kinky and kiltered kiddies.
We, your lamenting and loquacious lumpen.
We, your mean and maundered morons.
We, your nameless and nurture less nothings.
We, your obsequious and obedient oafs.
We, your picayune and preposterous pulers.
We, your quivering and querulous quakers.
We, your reeking and rancid roisterers.
We, your slinking and slithering slime.
We, your trembling and tottering toads.
We, your unctuous and unworthy underlings.
We, your vile and verminous villeins.
We, your warped and worthless waiters.
We, your xanthippic and xeropthalmialic xenophobes.
We, your yelping and yielding yokels.
We, your zoned and zapped zogs.

Do humbly beseech of your almighty persons:

That You should look with favor upon your loyal subjects of the
Westermark and grant them the status of Barony.

For;

They have the requisite number of members for this status within the
bounds of their Shire.

And;

They have raised up numerous fighters for the defense of their borders
against their rapacious neighbors who are at Your Majesties' service
for the protection of the realm,

And;

They have presented divers entertainments for the enlightenment and
edification of Your Majesties' subjects,

And;

They have thrown many revels proclaimed throughout the Knowne World
for their refinement and taste,

And;

They have fostered oodles of activities which have increased the
numbers of Your Majesties subjects in the Westermark and which have
been recognized to the degree that there are currently within the
bounds of the Westermark;
Nine Awards of Arms
Three Orders of the Leaf of Merit
Two Queen's Order of Grace
Two Members of the Queen's Guard
Two Holders of the Queen's Cypher
One Order of the Rose Leaf
And
Two Members of the Order of the Astral Fog

And;

They have a complete compliment of tried and tested officers who will
ensure a true perfection of administration within the bounds of the
Westermark.

And;

They have given many crass and weighty bribes to the Throne and have
not, until this moment, called in their chips,

And;

They have established a reputation throughout the Kingdom for honor
and service to the degree that all and sundry speak the name of
"Westermarker" in tones of reverent awe and humble respect.

And;

They have numerous etchings of certain highly placed individuals in
exceedingly compromising positions.

Therefore!

In consideration of these glorious achievements and any others Your
Bounteous Majesties may have occasion to think of, we do humbly beg
that Your Majesties grant Westermark the status of Barony and that you
name the noble Catalin di Napoli Baron thereof that Your loyal
subjects within the Westermark may better serve Your Majesties
interests and continue to raise the state of Your Majesties Kingdom to
ever higher levels of culture and prosperity.

The First Baron of the Westermark, Catalin di Napoli, recalls, "I believe King Frederick and Queen Nicorlyn were the reigning monarchs who approved the elevation to Barony."

A. Changes of status:
Here there was the petition of the Shire of Westermark (West Kingdom) to be advanced to Barony status. Various members of the Shire (including the prospective Baron and Baroness) were present to discuss the matter. There had been mixed opinion whether or not Westermark should be so elevated. The King of the West recommended it, but the Prince of the Mists did not, feeling that there was no need for a Barony in that region. Westermark is also a group with an unusual reputation, being combined of creativity, political satire, service, and disrespect of conventions, thus they have generated much opinion among other local members. After much discussion, the Board decided to approve the change in status. M/s/c Stone-Tracie that in the absence of a formal recommendation by the Steward, given both the approval of the King of the West and knowledge of Catalin di Napoli and Ana Moonstar, the Board approves the elevation of the Shire of Westermark to the status of Barony, pending the official counts from the Registry. The motion was passed unanimously.

Random Memories

Westermark Awards: The Order of the Westermark is the highest award in Westermark and is given for either Arts/Service/War, Baronial Accolade, Pearl of the Westermark for services to the barony, and the Purple Pearl Heart of the Westermark which is given for injuring oneself in the service of the barony.

Catalin di Napoli recalls: "The Baronial Accolade was given out purely at our discretion. I gave a ring off my hand in the beginning. It was to recognize poeple who did very cool/nice/neato keano things for us personally or for the Barony. You could get only one Order of the Westermark but get a baronial accolade (read attaboy) any time we felt like it. I have no idea who we gave accolades to. It seems it also fell out of practice which was sad. We didn't want to get top-heavy with awards. There was the OW and then the accolades could cover anything else we wanted."

Chiara Genevieve adds: "I recall asking Baron Catalin about the awards and when he told us about the ring, Baron Martin and I thought that was very cool. Since Baron Corwyn and Baroness Susanna created the Pearl of the Westermark for attaboys, we decided to use either a silver or copper bracelet we happened to be wearing as our accolade and award it to those who did works we were either moved or inspired by."

Order of the Westermark: In a discussion regarding the ribbon colors for The Order of the Westermark.

Catalin di Napoli recalls: "Anna and I made two Westermark Awards. The Order of the Westermark and the Baronial Accolade. The order was a scroll as I remember. The dangly bits did not come until later."

Leon von Schrecken (aka Leon David von Schrecken) recalls: "As for the purple ribbons, it was thought that because OWs were given for arts, fighting and service, that the "founder's" OWs had to be different, hence purple..."

The Founder's -- Holders of the Purple Ribboned Order of the Westermark: Catalin di Napoli, Ana Moonstar, Gerhardt von Nordflammen, Wolf Sagan von Osten-See, Andrew Shay Forestborn, Wolfshall MacWombat, Leon von Schrecken, Christina Maris Ledida (Christina Murus Lepida?), Mungo Waleron MacMungo, Keara an Akback, Ann Phlanges Sanctos, Alan of Ockham, Ella du Vergne, and Walter Kempe of Falconhold (aka Walter of Haven).

The Westermark Anthem "Oh Westermark, Your Forests":

Leon von Schrecken (aka Leon David von Schrecken) recalls: "The Westermark Anthem was started by Gerhardt... It did have a tune but no one could carry it...soooo."

In a discussion regarding the Westermark Anthem's Hand Gesture, is it "the Death Commando's Salute" (which drops down to "contacting the mothership") or "hang ten"?

The Baron Catalin di Napoli recalls: "Remember in the "Life of Brian" when the suicide squad kill themselves in front of the cross? Well ... that is the orgin of the hand position. We were all standing around a fire at oh-dark-thirty and Wolfshall McWombat and I did the fist salute while we sang the song the first time ...... this dovetails into shifting the fist into the "hang ten" configuration (fist still to side of head) to simulate a headphone so "Death Commando Grey" (Wolfshall) could radio Death Commando Black" (Me) when we were playing pretend death commandos at the neighbors swimming pool. And that, my friends, is the origin of the fist salute ... we stole it from a movie ...."

Leon von Schrecken (aka Leon David von Schrecken) recalls: "The comment "to contact the mothership" seemed to be a worthy early remark. I think it was Wombat who decided we needed a salute to go with the anthem."

Viscount Chad comments: "Well that was the way I learned to do it, so I am gonna blame Andrew."

Baron Martin recalls: "I was once told by Sir John that if you flip the salute so the pinkie hovers just over your mouth it also signified "Death Commando communicating" ...may or may not have been part of the "traditions lost in the fog of time."

Baron Corwyn da Costa guesses "I remember the thumb and pinkie salute, also... one explanation (from Raven, remember them?) was it represented a hand grasping a tankard, which was your head (and thus full of booze).
The thumb down version showed up later....I think it must have been in Chad's tenure...pretty much seemed that everyone did it that way, so we went along (believe it or not, to not cause waves). I just assumed it was from life of Brian (one of the terrorist group salutes..PFJ? JPF?)
"

In a discussion regarding Westermark Traditions -- Challenge Croquet:

Baroness Susanna states: "I just want to pathetically but emphatically explain the invention of Challenge Croquet by ME. I generally don't like playing games with rules as then I might lose (or become competitive and no one wants that, ask Corwyn) no rules, no winner, no loser. Croquet is one of those games which can get very rules bound and competitive so in order to play I changed it. This was in the very early '90's when we lived in LA. Shortly after we moved back here our friend Gabrielle became queen and she wanted to do a pirate court at Madness. For some inexplicable reason she particularly wanted Corwyn's and my help. I suppose Westermark had been having croquet at Madness and they were looking for someone to run the game. I said, "Oh I can do that." and ran around the site borrowing odds and ends and looking for ditches and mounds. I may have set the course up another year after that but I mainly recall Pete was going to Madness and setting things up, having played challenge croquet at our parties for years. Corwyn and I had friends in the Westermark but didn't really start attending meetings etc. until the end of Chad and Athelesia's tenure so aside from that first time or two, I wouldn't have been associated with the game in Westermark memories."

In a discussion regarding the Gerhardt Song P.P.F.U.F.:

Baron Catalin recalls: "... I think the last verse "A place for every person every person in their place" was mine .... actually ..... Gherhardt just put it in 'cuz I was the baron. Gawd we had fun back then!"

Leon added: "... Gerhardt and I had had a conversation about your quote. He was truely inspired by that statement. It is the linchpin of Progressive Feudalism. You Shining Star of Feudalism you."
