Westermark Creates a Viking Dress for Mists Competition!
Principality of the Mists, Fall Coronet, September 18th, 2004
The Principality of the Mist's A&S and Gold Key Officers challenged local groups to each create a garment for Gold Key.
The challenge was to take the Gold Key provided fabric and embroidery thread and create a garment. The ladies of Westermark
got together and created a complete lady's Viking outfit consisting of an apron dress, underdress, coif, and accessories!
Here's the documentation we presented:
A Viking Dress Made by the Barony of the Westermark
This is a Viking dress, women's size 16-18. Donated by the Barony of the Westermark for the Principality Gold Key Competition.
The undergown is made from a linen blend fabric and the apron dress is made of a wool blend, both supplied by Mists Gold Key.
We decided to add a period coif to the ensemble, as no good woman would be seen in public with a bare head! The coif is made
of 100% flax linen and uses a common coif pattern. Cynthia du Pré Argent has a good sample at her website, "How to make a Coif: 1 and 3 piece patterns"
The cut and style of the underdress is based on a simple undergarment design, however we choose not to use gores under the
arms. The apron dress is based on a design from Carolyn Priest-Dorman’s "Ninth and Tenth Century Women's Wear"
We choose to move the gores to the side front garment seams rather than on the sides because it gives the dress a much better line and
makes movement within the garment easier. Additionally, we added some slight sizing in the bust as larger sized wearers frequently have
more curvaceous shapes than the basic pattern indicates.
Embroidery on the apron dress is done using wool crewel yarn and is a variant of the Vandyke stitch, from Carolyn Priest-Dorman’s
"Viking Embroidery Stitches and Motifs" (http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikembroid.html).
This is a directional stitch that added a great visual design to the dress. Embroidery on the underdress is done using the less complex variant of the Vandyke stitch and is worked
in DMC cotton embroidery floss provided by Mists Gold Key. Although this stitch is generally used along seams (www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikembroid.html)
it was selected for its similarity to the embroidery on the outer garment.
* Dress, underdress and coif construction by Aurelia d'Ouessant
* Embroidery by Juliana of the Westermark and Chiara Genevieve d'Anjou, with design suggestions by Thyri de Peel.
* Brooches made by Geoffrey Mathias and Thorfinn of Rivenoak
* Beads and accessories donated by Crystal of the Westermark and Iduna Nornadottir
* Coif donated by Aurelia d'Ouessant
Westermark received an award for "Most Period Garment"!
Donated to Mists Gold Key at Mists Fall Coronet, Sept 18, AS XXXIX

The Funeral Feast of Romeo and Juliette -- April 23, 2005
The barony hosted a most somber event, hoping the tumultuous sides of the bitter feud could be brought to peace and
resolution while honoring the fair and gentle lovers. Despite the best efforts of their Highnesses, Leotohlf and Quentyn,
Prince and Princess of the Mists, the families were not disuaded from insulting one another throughout the feast!
The feast was amazing! It was designed by Mistress Crystal and prepared by Lady Sarah! Throughout the day many
bards entertained those attending. Of note, was Lady Alys' bardic presentation, sung by herself and Countess Evone
as the Great Ladies Montegue and Capulet, which had the audience rolling with laughter! Most shocking of all, was the
late arrival of a postcard from Romeo to his family, saying "All is Well! Please send money, Juliette loves to shop!"
Turning this somber occasion into a happy revel for all!
The Autocrats: Lady Juliana and Mistress Crystal.
Sorry, no photos available for this event!
